What Does a Lifestyle Family Photographer do Best?

I am both an artist and a writer. When I combine both of these passions within my photography, my best work results. These are the elements that I use within my business as a lifestyle family photographer. I try to tell the story of every person that I am working with whether it is a family photo shoot, a newborn photo session, or a senior portrait session.

The Importance of Planning Your Lifestyle Family Session

Who can resist the details of baby feet?

The best family photographers are planners! I truly believe this. I plan every session, by taking detailed notes of my clients from our phone calls and correspondence, visiting the location of the shoot prior to the session date to seek out where will be the best light, and then thinking about the story that I want to tell. I journal after my sessions in order to think about what I photographed and how I might approach it differently in a future session. But on the day of a photo shoot, I am all about looking for, and preserving the beautiful details of my clients. Whether it is the tiny eyelashes of a baby during a newborn session, or the bouncy curls of a toddler during family photos, or the ways a teenager’s eyes sparkle when they laugh during their senior portrait, I look for, and capture it all.

Lifestyle Photography Sessions Are Meant to Celebrate Real Life

So what does this mean for my clients as they prepare for their next photo session? It means that they can relax. Family pictures usually result in some form of chaos and that’s okay! Kids get grumpy or tired or hungry - or a combination of all three - right when the camera comes out of the bag. A toddler might have a runny nose and sneeze all over everyone. Your dog might jump in the dirty pond that is supposed to provide a nice backdrop (this actually happened to me at a summer family photo session a few year ago!). None of this is new. None of this phases me or surprises me. So, moms, you can relax and please, please try to breathe, let go, and see the beauty that is all around you. In the midst of this chaos that we call family, these are the in between moments and details that I will preserve for you. It is the way that your toddler laughs when they are sitting on daddy’s shoulders; or, the toothless smile of your 7 year old as they gaze at their older brother. It is the gentle way your husband pulls you in close and rubs your back as you squeeze in tight for one last group family picture. It is the sparkle of sunshine that shines through the trees and envelops you in beautiful light as you dance, laugh, play or embrace in the arms of your loved ones.

What are the details that you want to preserve during your next family, newborn, or senior portrait session?
