What Should I Wear to My Family Photography Session?

Whether it’s a family, maternity, or senior session, it’s often difficult to think of what to wear to your photoshoot! To help in this process, I have created a Styling Page that has everything from color palates that go perfectly together to access to my client wardrobe for women and children. We have also prepared a Men’s Picks page with direct links to a variety of shops where you can purchase items. This helps you customize perfectly coordinated outfits so that you and your family can look your best for your session! It’s a great and easy way to insure that your pictures turn out beautifully and you have a wonderful session!

What are the Best Colors for a Family Photo Shoot?

When planning their wardrobe for their family photo session, I encourage my clients to opt for earth tones. Earth tones photography beautifully, they are timeless, and they work the best with my editing style. The result will be beautiful images that you will appreciate for years to come and you will look beautiful! Rusts, sage greens, slate blues, khakis, chocolate browns, and ivories will all look amazing in my studio as well as outdoors. Our client wardrobe has been curated to reflect these colors making it easy for you to make your selections. You will receive a link to a styling guide 30 days prior to your session, which will show you perfect combinations. An important thing to remember when thinking about colors is that you opt for colors that compliment each other and avoid all wearing the same color! A key method is to choose one outfit to have a beautiful print and then select other items that compliment that colors in that print. You should also add in textures that allow for beautiful visual interest. For example, knit scarves, hats, or a shawl are all wonderful ways to add in texture. They also serve to keep you cozy on cold fall family photography evenings.

What Clothing Items Should I Avoid for Family Photography?

Avoid blue jeans! This section is highlighted because yes, it’s that important! While jeans are often something that many of us feel most comfortable in - especially men - they are not a good option for your photo shoot! They will often photograph very dark or almost black. Earth toned pants are the way to go - they will coordinate with everyone’s outfits the best and create the most timeless look. Unless its light denim, stay away from jeans! The second item to avoid are athletic sneakers or shoes with logos can be distracting in your photos. Wear casual dress shoes or boots instead! When we are in the studio, you are welcome to be barefoot!

How Does Styling Work?

Approximately 30 days before your session, yu will receive an email and link to my women’s client closet and children’s client closet. To get started, you can ”heart” specific dresses and outfits that you like and save them under your email, or, simply email me a screenshot. You may also opt to have outfits chosen for you, by simply responding to the email with your sizes and color preferences.

Three Weeks Before Your Session:

You may contact me directly to schedule a try-on or to confirm which options I should to bring to your outdoorsession. A dressing tent will be available for you to change into/out of your dress. I take care of all the cleaning! In the studio, all of your dresses and outfits will be waiting for you in your dressing room. You may try-on as many dresses as you wish. I want this to be a fun and effortless experience for you so you can focus on what is most important, your beautiful family!
